Audiobook Summary:
Castlibrary UK is proud to present Northern Lights (Unabridged). This audiobook is available for download for our UK based customers.
This is the first book in the Carnegie Medal and Guardian Award-winning trilogy His Dark Materials, from Philip Pullman. Set in a parallel world very similar to our own, Northern Lights tells the compelling story of 12-year-old Lyra's quest to rescue her friend and find her father, aided by her daemon, an armoured bear, and a witch-queen. This prize-winning tale is narrated with vigour and dynamism by the author and a full cast. Written and read by Philip Pullman. ©1995 Philip Pullman; (P)2000 BBC Audiobooks Ltd Published: 04/10/2007, BBC WW Customers who bought this also bought… £16.49 £7.99 £19.99 £7.99 £8.89 £7.99 £11.69 £7.99 Customer Reviews 107 Visitors' Rating: This is a fantastic dramatization of the book. I heard this on tape and wanted to buy the cds from audible, they didn't have it at that time so I bought the other version - a big mistake! This version is superior in every way. The author Philip Pullman is a brilliant narrator and the characters are great too especially Lyra. I cannot recommend this highly enough. For adult and older children, you will not want it to end! Can we have the next 2 cds soon!! I can,t wait. pajb, United Kingdom 16/10/2007 48/50 registered users found this helpful | Register This is fantastic! Pullman is excellent as the narrator and the characters bring the whole story to life. You feel as if you are on the sidelines watching as the story unfolds. This is definately one to listen to and lose yourself in. Great for adults and older children. Paula , United Kingdom 22/10/2007 18/18 registered users found this helpful | Register I read the book, listened to the dramatised version and then the unabridged version here on Audible. This helped while away the commute very nicely thanks. Pullman’s narration is perfect and his creation in this trilogy is incredible. His invention of the Alethiometer is fascinating, the out-of-kilter world that Lyra lives in and the rest of the cast of characters and their daemons are superb. Once I have listened to these I don’t know what I am going to do as I will miss them so much! Gordon, Fareham, United Kingdom 03/12/2007 11/12 registered users found this helpful | Register Read more customer reviews This is one of the most entertaining audiobooks I have ever listened to. I say one of the most because the two sequels in this trilogy The Subtle Knife (Unabridged) and The Amber Spyglass (Unabridged) are the other most entertaining audiobooks. Northern Lights is a fantastic tale which has undoubtedly been perfected by having the story narrated by the author and a full cast to play the characters. Philip Pullman has a soothing voice which makes listening to him speak a pleasure. The cast are also excellent at bringing this recording to life which makes you feel like you are right in the middle of the action which I’m afraid you will never experience while reading the book. This recording is definitely five stars and this is a story that I will return again and again and I will never get bored of listening to it. If you want to experience a magical audiobook then you must definitely listen to this one. Pamela, London, United Kingdom 01/05/2008 3/3 registered users found this helpful | Register This unabridged reading of the book is the best approach to an audio adaptation yet. The author reads the narration but a full cast of actors read in the dialogue, giving it the immediacy of a dramatisation without the compromise of cutting and reworking the plot. There is also the fine BBC dramatisation of the trilogy, but this unabridged version is superior in both completeness and presentation. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the overbearing music, which is fortunately used very sparsely. Highly recommended. Tim, Saltcoats, United Kingdom 25/01/2008 2/2 registered users found this helpful | Register Just fantastic. Can't wait to hear the next book in the series. Jemma, United Kingdom 12/05/2008 2/2 registered users found this helpful | Register I didn't know the 'Dark Materials Trilogy' before listening to this, and although a fantasy story aimed at children, most of the time it isn't a bad adult listen either as the characters are interesting. Perhaps, a bit overrated I think overall, yet it does have great imagination in its settings, but little humour if any (it's all very earnest) Pullman however, makes a very fine narrator of his tale. If you enjoy fantasy, and are willing to step into the shoes of a child, you won't go wrong with this. Matthew, United Kingdom 09/05/2008 2/2 registered users found this helpful | Register This audiobook was a joy to listen too and was narrated well. The cast as with all BBC productions is chosen well and fit there parts perfectly. I enjoyed listening to this book and would listen again to pick up where I might have missed something in the first instance. Despite the fanastic narration I do feel this book is not aimed at the general public rather children and young adults. It does however have some underlying issues which if you care to read into may shock or concern. These issues are not aimed at the younger generation. This however does not detract from an excellent well read book. It certainly knocks the socks of the recent hollywood production of this novel. Melanie, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 06/01/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register This is delightfully narrated by Philip Pullman and the additional voices just add to the tension and atmosphere. I did feel the choice of voice for Lyra a bit grating and sometimes persistently louder than the others but despite this I just had to rush straight to my PC to buy and download the Subtle Knife as soon as it had finished. Beware - this series is addictive! - a sort of cross between Harry Potter and H.G Wells. dogsapples, Bristol, United Kingdom 03/01/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register Do not be put off buying this edition because you have seen The Golden Compass it is by far superior to the adaptation in every respect. The narration is wonderfull and Phillip Pullman puts so much into his reading you are automatically drawn to the next part of the trilogy. Amazing and a must for young and old Lindsay-Jan, Portsmouth, United Kingdom 17/04/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register This was my first audio book experience and I am now well and truly hooked! Pullman is an excellent narrator and kept me glued to my ipod. The characters are fascinating. Philip Pullman certainly has a great imagination. What an interesting twist at the end. I would never have guessed! I will certainly be recommending this book to my friends and family. puddlescat, Stockport, United Kingdom 27/12/2007 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register Having watched and enjoyed the movie 'The Golden Compass' I heard many friends who had read the original books and expressed how much better they were than the film. I didn't realise how right they were! Fantastically written and brilliantly read by Mr Pullman himself this audiobook was truly a joy. The actors were all of the highest standard and the whole thing left me enraptured from start to finish. Top notch. Aidan, United Kingdom 26/09/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register i was recommended this title some years ago by a shop keeper who told me not to be put off by the fact that it was a childrens book. so i spent the money and bought it on tape. only the first title. i listened to it in a day and i went back to the same shop and bought the last two! this book and the whole series has been so well written i never get tired of listening to it. and when i found this title on audible i was so glad to find it as my origional copy i had on tape is now damaged! all i can say is that give this book a try and keep an open mind about it. you won't be disappointed! Darren, United Kingdom 22/01/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register I loved this book and I am so looking forward to hearing the rest of it in volume 2 and 3... I loved the characters, and the way the other world is woven together a small clue here and there was superb... I recomend this book highly... Julian, United Kingdom 27/07/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register Wonderfully read and a great story I loved this audiobook and was sad when it ended. I was moved to tears on occasion and keyed up with excitement at other times. No other audiobooks I have listened to have matched this. Better than the film because so much is in your imagination.
