Castlibrary UK is proud to present The Time Travelers Wife (Unabridged). This audiobook is available for download for our UK based customers.
The Time Traveler's Wife is now a Hollywood feature film. Shortlisted for Audible's Listen of the Year, 2006. Winner of the British Book Awards, Popular Fiction Award, 2006. A Richard and Judy Book Club Selection. This extraordinary, magical novel is the story of Clare and Henry who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36, and were married when Clare was 22 and Henry 30. Impossible but true, because Henry has Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity in his past, present, and future. The Time Traveller's Wife depicts the effects of time travel on Henry and Clare's marriage and their passionate love for each other. "Highly original first novel...Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes...It is a fair tribute to her skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with the impression of life's riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills." (Publishers Weekly) Customer Reviews 333 Visitors' Rating: This has got to be THE most fantastic book I have ever read. I have recommended it to anyone I have spoken to. It is in essence a love story, but with a fantastic twists and turns, and you do end up believing in Henry's disorder. It takes a little getting used to, Henry's changing age, but when you get past that ... FANTASTIC!!!! itswendywoo, Leicester, United Kingdom 11/11/2005 37/40 registered users found this helpful | Register The book rambles along with no real point. The character travels back and forth in time but does not seem to experience anything that gives any relevance to the person reading it. So incredibly boring and pointless! I really recomend you to pick something else or at least hear the sample before you purchase. martinne11, Rayleigh, United Kingdom 16/09/2005 31/107 registered users found this helpful | Register A sad and very endearing tail that has a number of unexpected turns that keeps you attention. I would recommend it to anyone who has that believes that some relationships are just meant to be. A story you will wish to hear again. Mike, Coventry, United Kingdom 17/10/2005 20/22 registered users found this helpful | Register Read more customer reviews I don't normally write reviews but I loved this novel so much I have to put my feelings into words. You have to concentrate on the detail, i.e. Henry's and Claire's ages. But having done that it really is a lovely story. I still have it on my mp3 player and can't bring myself to erase it as I loved it so much. phil46, Sidcup, United Kingdom 09/06/2006 6/7 registered users found this helpful | Register My mother isn't into audio books so she's getting this in written form for christmas, an absolutely brilliant piece of fictional work. Maybe I'm the only one but I found William Hope's narration particularly stale and dry towards the start, with little emotional feedback. For anyone that experiences the same I would urge them to hang on in there because as your relationship with the characters develops, so does Mr Hope's (the male voice). To me he ended up really taking on the role of 'Henry' and to be quite frank I don't see how anyone other than these narrators could play the roles of Henry and Clare for any film version. Simply wonderful and utterly absorbing - I was listening to it in the car and found myself stuck in the car parked up at the end of my journey, still listening and unable to drag myself away on numerous occasions! Jakob, Leicester, United Kingdom 06/12/2006 5/5 registered users found this helpful | Register This is a wonderful, very real love story about how some people are just destined to be together. I was worried (from reading other reviews) that the time travel idea would get in the way, but it doesn't at all. You soon get used to the changes in time, and these changes allow the writer to weave a powerful tale, picking up threads and dropping them throughout the story so that you are reminded of things that happened before - so clever. This is not a soppy, sentimental love story, it is at times crude and harsh. Life for the characters is not all soft focus and easy - they have to go through the messy, bad bits that everyone else has to. It is this that makes it such a credible, beautiful, real-life love story. I was sorry that it had to end. I would heartily recommend this book! tochambers, Coldharbour Lane, Frenchay, United Kingdom 19/04/2006 5/6 registered users found this helpful | Register The story of Henry and Claire is so amazing, it completely took over my live and even when not listening I was thinking about the them constantly. Their characters became so real to me, that when the book finished, I felt like I was missing friends. The author has written a wonderful magical beautiful dramatic story of these two people and the bizzare life they share, thanks to Henry's strange chromo abnormality. I bought the book when everyone was talking about it and didn't make it past the first twenty or so pages and listening to it, I must say, it took my about twenty minutes to start understanding what was going on, but soon I was hooked I couldn't stop listening. Probably also thanks to the narrators: both are so brilliant, they really bring Henry and Claire to life. I hope Audrey Niffenegger will keep writing lots more amazing books , I believe this is her first, but I can't see how she could ever write anything equally wonderful and exciting as this. 100% recommended - and do not go for the abridged version, you'd only regret it at the end! Cerstin, United Kingdom 24/03/2007 5/6 registered users found this helpful | Register I cried out loud, laughed out loud, couldn't 'put it down', ached with the pathos and lived every minute of this glorious love affair. It is a little confusing until you work out what is happening, but so rewarding. I didn't want to get to the end, which gradually dawns on you like a cancer - I empathised with both characters so much due to the writing I was genuinely fearful of the climax, but then was so pleased I wasn't left as empty as I felt 'reading' the last few hours. I'm glad I bought this as an audio book - I would have missed out on so much...thank you. Nigel, Leeds, United Kingdom 11/04/2006 4/4 registered users found this helpful | Register Ok, I'm not one for love stories and to be honest I wasn't expecting one. The book started off a little confusing but graduly drags you in and consumes you. The narration is fantastic and is probably the only book I've listened to with two narrators one for Henry and one for Clare. All the way through I laughed and at times I had tears and as the story unfolds, realisation of earlier revelations, reveal themselves. A truley well written and narrated book. 5 stars Chris, leicester, United Kingdom 12/07/2006 3/3 registered users found this helpful | Register I loved this book. Excellently read, kept me hungry for more on my 15 minute commutes too and from work. How I longed for a different ending, but the inevitable came. Well worth a listen - highly recommended. palas, United Kingdom 13/07/2006 3/3 registered users found this helpful | Register I thought I had listened to some good books on here but my goodness...this one blew me away. I got so engrossed by the characters, I felt almost everything they went through. Truly a fantastic listen. I didn't want it to end. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who has a heart. Hayley, Arnold, United Kingdom 19/06/2008 3/3 registered users found this helpful | Register No long winded review hear. Like romance?, Like a touch of Sci-Fi?,a bit of fantasy?, and above all, intelligent and delightful character driven fiction at it's very best? You've got it!! If you don't like this, you ain't not got a pulse! Andrew, Kirkcaldy, United Kingdom 12/05/2006 2/2 registered users found this helpful | Register This is one of those novels that is really enhanced by being an audio book. The narrators are absolutley excellent and keep you riveted to the story. I think this is probably the best produced audiobook I have heard. Andrew, Bristol, United Kingdom 15/08/2007 2/2 registered users found this helpful | Register What a joy to listen to. A wonderfully conceived story, well written with forceful characterisation and beautifully brought to life by the readers. It made me laugh and it made me cry, both of which are dangerous when driving! Don't miss it. Robb, SELBY, United Kingdom 07/03/2006 2/2 registered users found this helpful | Register This is a gorgeous book, beautifully read by the two narrators. I'd had it recommended to me before, but had not got round to reading it yet, so when I saw an unabridged version here I thought it would be ideal - I wasn't disappointed. Having two narrators really helped to bring to life how the main characters separately experienced the time travel and their disjointed love affair. At times I listened to it a lot wanting to rush through and find out what was going to happen next, but at others it was almost too painful to listen and I only listened for short periods. This is a book that will certainly stay with me. Extremely poignant and moving and it certainly makes you think! What more could you ask of a book. heffalump007, London, United Kingdom 22/01/2006 2/2 registered users found this helpful | Register I tried to read the book but my mind couldn't process the time changes and I had to keep flipping backwards and forwards through the pages. I gave up. But then I downloaded this book from Audible and it all flowed. It is a powerful story, based on timeless love and time travel. But it doesn't fit neatly into the science fiction category - it is more of an intellectual romance. You need to listen without engaging your need for a serial time-line and then it will all make sense. Intellectually very engaging. It is the best fiction book I have listened to so far and I am really looking forward to the film coming out next year so that I can compare the two. If you do nothing else this year make sure you listen to this book. Then you can watch the film next year and see how it rates. I would rate this book 10/10. Amanda, Waterlooville, United Kingdom 12/07/2008 2/2 registered users found this helpful | Register I found this book totally captivating once I had become used to the format. Claire and Henry were very believable and well performed by the two readers. Much of the subject matter and language is adult and may not be acceptable to everyone. Anne, Aylesford, United Kingdom 07/07/2008 2/2 registered users found this helpful | Register So compelling I couldn't put it down. A fascinating and absorbing love story. I agree that the the twists and turns are a little hard to keep up with at times but you do begin to belive that it is all true. Henry and Claire became part of my life for a few days - a story I will listen to again and again even if it did make me cry. smerrill, Peterborough, United Kingdom 25/01/2006 2/2 registered users found this helpful | Register When I began this I was thinking, 'there had better be a good explanation for this, or I shall be Very Cross', but as it went on, I became so wound up in the characters and their story that I was able to suspend my disbelief, and enjoy it. The logistics were quite beyond me - I couldn't work out who was supposed to know what, or when. There were too many short episodes which kept breaking the rhythm and adding to the confusion, and all the precise dates and times were unnecessary and distracting. However, the characters were well-drawn, convincing and original (how refreshing to have a librarian as the protagonist!). I really wanted to know what was going to happen to them all. The style was rich and descriptive, bringing alive the places and situations. It just got a bit long-drawn-out and repetitive towards the end - I found myself longing for the denouement. Mirium, United Kingdom 31/01/2008 2/3 registered users found this helpful | Register I couldn't wait to listen to the next instalment of this book - I felt completely wrapped up in Claire and Henry's lives, and the twists and turns of how the affliction affects both of their lives from start to finish. One of the first fictional novels I've downloaded, and now I'm searching in vain for something even remotely comparable! Fenella, United Kingdom 15/08/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register It took me a long time to get into this book and i found it could be confusing with the different timelines. Im glad I took the time to really get into this book and once I was into it I was caught like a rabbit in the headlights unable to put it down. The book is well narrated and the distinction between the two narrators adds that little something exciting to what is already a fantastic read. Craig, denny, United Kingdom 14/09/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register This is a beautiful and most unusual love story. The story, like the time traveller, travels all over the place so you really have to pay attention but it is well worth it. I have not heard anything else quite like it. Karen, Plumstead, United Kingdom 05/08/2007 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register This book is fantastic. It is written so well that you find yourself engrossed. Jan, United Kingdom 19/08/2006 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register This is one of the best audio books I have ever listened to. At first I thought to myself 'this is a bit unbelievable' but keep listening because it gradually grabs hold of you as the love story element unfolds. It is a very moving and well crafted tale, do download it, you will not be disappointed. Fiona, United Kingdom 12/10/2006 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register An excellent listen. The Time Travellers Wife is a captivating story that never disappoints and often surprises its listener. I was totally immersed in the lives of Henry and Clare and was quite sad when at last I came to the end of the story and was tempted to go straight back to the beginning and start listening all over again. My enjoyment of the book was enhanced by the comforting tones of the narrators William Hope and Laurel Lefkow who make one feel part of the story right from the beginning. However, although Audrey Niffenegger has a fine talent for story telling and has a great command of language I was disappointed that the sex scenes in the book appear clumsy, almost on the point of “dirty”. In all other aspects of the story she brings out the emotions and the feelings of the characters in full Technicolor which makes them live in ones own mind but despite this talent on the coming together of two so much in love I felt that she fell far short of the mark. Ian, Scholar Green, United Kingdom 12/06/2007 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register I can see why people found it confusing but it's fascinating and engrossing. I wanted to see how it finished but didn't want it to end. The characters were really engaging and like the way it was read- Henry has a real humour. Loved it. Kathy, United Kingdom 10/04/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register I only found out after I started listening to this that it was, essentialy, a love story, albeit with a very significant difference! Despite that, and being a fortysomething who is not normally into love stories and more into thrillers and action packed rollercoasters ... I loved it! It was a very enjyable read indeed. Lot's of twists and turns, with constantly surprising 'jumps' backward and forward in time that kept you on your toes. And, one of the things I loved most to listening to this book? The voices of Clare (Laurel Kefkow) and Henry (William Hope) were PERFECT for the parts - totally engaging! Thanks Audrey Niffeneger - an awesome first book. Angus, Guildford, United Kingdom 13/04/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register A brilliantly woven tale. The characterisations by Laurel Lefkow and William Hope are outstanding and bring this book to life. Well worth downloading. hunterstone, United Kingdom 29/04/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register This is a fantastic audio book. I'm very sad its finished. A thoughtful story, and the readers were excellent. warriorwoman21, United Kingdom 30/04/2008 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register I grew up reading SF written by people with an exhaustive understanding of science, so this book left me cold. I would have probably been more forgiving of the premise if the characters themselves were more engaging. But a perfectly beautiful "artistic" wife was too much of a cliche, especially as the descriptions of her creative process were an exercise in hubris and had little to do with what, as a painter, I consider to be the actual experience. The time traveler himself seemed an insipid persona with no initiative. (Frankly, if I'd spent as much time worrying about ending up in that cage, I'd have probably given some thought to getting ready for the possibility - stashed some clothes in there or wire cutters... Did something!) Finally, the whole set-up was too predictable, overdone, and melodramatic. Nice little escapist story, but a good novel? Hardly. Cameron, United Kingdom 31/07/2009 1/1 registered users found this helpful | Register Once you get into the way it flows it becomes very compelling. It might not appeal to everyone but I found I had to keep listening. Graham, United Kingdom 04/12/2006 1/2 registered users found this helpful | Register As a lover of sci-fi - of all kinds, this book was totally refreshing. A well written plot about time travel. The narration is exceptionally good, as there are a female voice and a male voice portraying the characters. I loved it. Danielle, Harrogate, United Kingdom 14/11/2006 1/2 registered users found this helpful | Register Starts out alright, but in the end they just go on about how much they love each other and the more they do the more I hate them. Sam, southampton, United Kingdom 23/11/2008 1/2 registered users found this helpful | Register I hadn't a clue about what was going on due to all the time travelling. Totally confusing. I do not recommend this; however, I know lots of people who love it so I suppose it is a matter of taste. Alison, United Kingdom 19/02/2008 1/4 registered users found this helpful | Register Felt the first half was a little slow but once I arrived at the family Christmas I had became totally drawn into the intimacy of the relationship. Well worth a listen. Nicholas, hampton, United Kingdom 11/12/2008 Terrific story, superbly narrated. It takes no effort to share the ride with Clare and Henry. Matthew, Cobham, United Kingdom 17/12/2008 If I had a top ten list this book would have crashed straight in fantastic imagination, lovely written and made for the perfect double narrator audio book. Anthony, macclesfield, United Kingdom 20/12/2008 A touching, intelligently written novel that has quality throughout with wonderful twists and turns. If you like your fiction (Science or not) with a tragic element then you will enjoy this story. Mark, Bridgend, United Kingdom 25/12/2008 This is a truly wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone. I have avoided this book for years, fearing that it was going to be too unbelievable. Now I can't believe what I was missing. Jody, United Kingdom 12/01/2009 I was skeptical of the book because of the whole time travel storyline but bought it anyway as it had such good reviews. Its fabulous! I love the book and the readers. This is a book that works on so many levels but is still also entertaining. It made me think and laugh. Linda, Finland 21/01/2009 A pleasant and interesting listen, well recorded and read. Has to be read as a pleasant journey as it leaves too many points unanswered and unresolved. Recommended for beach time listening rather than occupying the intellect. Vivian, New Malden, United Kingdom 26/04/2009 I took a bit of gamble with this book as the story line isn't really one I'd usually go for, however I'd highly recommend giving it a listen as I thoroughly enjoyed it. Daniel, Ilkley, United Kingdom 20/09/2008 A truly gripping listen - it was hard to switch off as the narrative always leaves you wanting to hear more. The device of switching between male and female readers, representing the 2 main characters, added a depth to a fascinating story. The highs and lows of the character's lives result in a very satisfying experience for the listener. Kathleen, United Kingdom 11/02/2009 Sad, poignant, amusing and highly original. Full of tension and suspense as the story develops with unexpected twists and turns. Where science fiction meets romance. A great book. Richard, Swindon, United Kingdom 21/02/2009 The fantastic premise of this tale mirrors the uncertainties of love in this changing world, written with great intelligence and delightful literary allusion, I was enchanted, irritated, engrossed, curious, disappointed and sometimes confused - and always engrossed. The double narration is beautifully read. Judith, Pinner, United Kingdom 28/08/2006 All i can say is wow!! I loved this book. I'm going to listen to it all over again. Emma, Dumfries, United Kingdom 28/09/2006 Very good... Slight difficulty following the jumpy narrative. Andrew, Nantwich, United Kingdom 02/10/2006 I loved loved loved this book. I didnt want it to end. It is beautifully written and narrated. I recommend it to anyone who wants to escape from reality for a few hours Emma, Eastleigh, United Kingdom 17/08/2009 I loved this book. I suspect reading it might be confusing but the narrators carry you through the time jumps with ease and it all seems so natural. Great premise. Will listen to this again! Juliet, United Kingdom 20/08/2008 This is probably one of the best adult fantasies I have ever read. The characters are wonderfully real, with all of the human faults and excesses. Also, fascinating love story. Elizabeth, United Kingdom 20/11/2008 The basic premis is fascinating , all that cause and effect, effect and cause stuff but there are large stretches of the novel that read like an adolescent girls daydream. The main character is a handsome librarian son of a famous classical singer and a concert violinist who loves to read Rilke. His girlfriend is a beautiful talented artist, their daughter is equally beautiful talented and intelligent, they have fantasticaly interesting and loyal friends such as a socially aware marxist lawyer and his wife. If there is an abridged version go for it, you may not have to listen to long dull descriptions of Clare's dreams and the pretentious quoting of German poetry. Jim, CHELMSFORD, United Kingdom 14/07/2009 I bought this on the basis of the reviews on here and the fact that it has been consistiently in the best sellers list. I was entirely un-gripped by the rambling story and felt almost no emotional involvement with the characters. I did get to the end, but it was not a pleasure. worldwidewolfie, Hove, United Kingdom 09/11/2008 Ok, normally the phrase \"as recommended by Richard & Judy\" will have me running for the door and I only got the book because the airport was doing a \"3 books for £10\" promotion; I could only find 2 books I actually wanted & this sounded sci-fi. I was so wrong - I read this book almost at a single sitting, despite the lack of real sci-fi. It's a touching, facinating, love story and I hate love stories. I read action, thrillers & sci-fi and I really enjoyed this book. Perhaps a little confusing in places but rewards your perserverence a thousand fold. vitorquent, Peterborough, United Kingdom 10/11/2008 This book took a chapter or two but once you set of the Journey of life with Henry and Claire it really does get you thinking about what is time and mortality. The final chapter had me in tears on the train and I'm a grown man of 43! definitely worth a listen. captainpeaky, plumley, United Kingdom 17/10/2009 I am a librarian by profession, and I 'listen' to many books due to my hectic life. I do not ever read popular books as I believe they are usually a hype. However I recently decided to get this one. In short, I loved it. I lol-ed when 6 year old Clare told Henry he ate like a dog. It brought out emotions in me which I try very hard to hide. I think this book was compelling, more for the reason that it drew out a romance story so well, that it allowed the reader to anticipate feelings and emotions and to embrace them whole heartedly. I don't like happy endings anyway so this was also very realistic in a non sensical way. a fantastic, fantastical work of fiction!!!! Shon-El, United Kingdom 09/10/2009 I enjoyed the narration and the story is beautifully written – the prose is absolutely poetic. However it doesn’t deserve 5 stars for the following reasons: There was too much time travel – I felt some of the trips were gratuitous and dare I say boring? There was too much fine detail in the writing, endless lists, minute descriptions and erudite and poetic quotations, which only made me feel that the author was intent on letting the reader know that she was educated and had done lots of research. Perhaps a more experienced writer wouldn’t need to try so hard to impress the reader? I felt the end of the story was very weak! What was the point in dragging the story out? Overall it was a good listen, but probably 25% too long. I can’t imagine the film version as the beautiful writing, the book’s main strength, will be missing. Teresa, Claremorris Co Mayo, Ireland 27/08/2009 Not my cup of tea - nothing really happens no twists - just another way to tell a love/drama story of a relationship. Jens, Switzerland 14/05/2009 Loved this book. Became engrossed in it. Got up early just to listen to it. Stayed up late just to listen to it. An amazing love story with twists and turns ups and downs but always fascinating. Even if you dont normally like love stories dont miss out on this one it will keep you enthralled from beginning to end. Jane, United Kingdom 11/05/2009 I listened to the unabridged version but wish i'd listed to the abridged but that's only because I wanted less imagery and more story. Apart from that I loved it. The first half is a bit slow but worth sticking with thru the second half where it turns an interesting corner. I listened because I expected a time travel fest but got more of an interesting and gripping lover story but lots of interesting time travel tie-ins throughout. Go on - have a listen! Alan, United Kingdom 05/02/2007 Having just received an Ipod for Christmas this was my first downloaded listen. i had little idea what to expect but simply couldn't stop listening. I was completely mesmerised by the undulating storyline. Piecing the story together was like doing a jigsaw puzzle, it keeps you on your toes throughout. I was sorry when it ended. kellmorris, United Kingdom 17/02/2007 Fantastic, absolutely fantastic. Written and read wonderfully. I was so moved by the book, and the narration I actually sobbed at the end! Yes the story jumps about, and sometimes you don’t know what is going on, but you just have to keep listening and all becomes clear eventually. My one tiny criticism is the use of the c work for the female genitalia, it’s only used twice but I find the word offensive. But still definitely worth a read. Ragen, United Kingdom 25/09/2007 The kind of book that it so good you feel depressed when its over! This is one of the best books ive encountered, very well written. Enjoy Joseph, United Kingdom 24/02/2009 Really enjoyed this book, the readers of this book do a great job of making the book come to life. center15, Ireland 24/08/2009 It took a little while to understand what was going on but once I got into this book, I really enjoyed it. I know a couple of people who have read the book and have said that it was really confusing, but listening to it with two readers taking the two leads, it made far more sense. Listen to it as soon as you can! Elaine, Cannington, United Kingdom 13/10/2007 It's 2008 and Peter is 61!! I would not have brought the book to read normally but the audio version is captivating. I can't recommend it enough. Peter, Porthcawl, United Kingdom 08/02/2008 I couldn't wait to get my earphones on each day. Fabulous narrative, skillfully written, highly enjoyable. Linda, United Kingdom 06/09/2009 This audiobook is my second audiobook and i loved it. I lstened to it every morning and night on my home from work and i must admit at times i was chuckling away to myself while at others i was overcome with emotion. this book would be a fantastic read but definately worth listening too. the male and female readers engage really well with the story, although at times the male seems a bit stiff with his emotions. Recommend this to everyone who has time to relax as i dont think you could listen without thinking with all the time jumping and age differences. a lovely romance blossoming in the beginning will keep any lady happy. Good Listen - Definately worth it. Lyndsay, United Kingdom 08/09/2009 An incredibly moving and interesting book that is expertly read by William Hope & Laurel Lefkow. This is my first venture in audio books (as I'm normally an avid book reader). The Time Traveler's Wife has made my daily car journey to work an absolute adventure. Loved it! Hayley, United Kingdom 11/09/2009 I have listened to this audiobook 4 or 5 times now, and still enjoy every minute. It probably has the most fascinating and original subject matter of any book I have ever read. I recommend it to anyone interested in the quirky and unusual. Vicki, Bury St Edmunds, United Kingdom 08/03/2008 I enjoyed the story for the most part; both narrators are excellent and the book moves along quickly without need for too much concentration. It was easy to listen to it on long journeys and keep interested in the story. I have only two minor complaints: In the end, the story just seemed to fade away... a rather lame ending in comparison to the ingenuity of the story itself. Second, the author makes a big thing of various characters' catholicity but when it comes to describing catholic rites, doesn't have the details correct. This made me wonder what other details are inaccurate eg descriptions of Chicago's geography or some of the science involved. But these are minor; the story in itself is very enjoyable and clever in its conception. Easily recommended. Kevin, United Kingdom 10/06/2009 I mostly listen to non-fiction from Audible, but decided to try this after a few friends recommended. So glad I did. Possibly amongst the most wonderful books I have ever read / listened to. Still thinking about the story and characters. This one is hard to forget. Andrew, Cambourne, United Kingdom 14/06/2007 In a world that's full of so many books to read it is rare for me to re-read a novel. However, The Time Traveller's Wife is a rare gem that had to be re-visited. I found listening to the book even better than reading it. The story is so well read the characters become vivid and alive and completely believable. This is such a poignant story, but there is also intense humour in it. This could possible be my desert island read. Bronwen, Eltham, United Kingdom 29/11/2007 As you can see from other reviews, this is an entertaining and different story of a Henry & Claire's lives & relationships. It requires a suspension of disbelief to ignore the odd minor plot weaknesses, but the device of time travel forces the listener to consider parents, love, life & death events from a different perspective, which I found quite thought provoking. trevmorris, Beverley, United Kingdom 20/06/2009 The title comes from generations of women such as sailor's wives who spend so much time waiting. Claire our heroine does a lot of waiting. Some of the others have warned you it's a sad tale. I don't think it is at all. It's certainly intense, sometimes shocking, tragic and gory in parts. It does have a few naughty bits in it as well. You will too though I think laugh, giggle, perhaps shed a tear or two of joy and maybe even punch the air at other moments. The central theme of time travel might be a bit confusing for some but if you pay attention it does make sense. Just try and hang on and listen if bits of it does go a bit weird on you. It's a helluva ride. At a full 17 hours it's also good value. Mark, Nelson, United Kingdom 21/06/2009 a definate do before you die book. don't miss out no matter your age or sex i don't think that i could possibly go without it. Iain, United Kingdom 24/06/2009 This is an excellent book - unusual, thought provoking, a wonderful subversion of the cause-and-effect - made something truly wonderful by a superb double-handed realisation by two very good readers. Utterly believable and absorbing - undoubtedly one of the the best audio book I have ever heard. John, United Kingdom 04/10/2009 I listened to this audio book based on the recomendations. On the whole it was a good listen but there were times that I drifted away from it. When it was good, it was good. I enjoyed the flow of the time travel and how it all came together to create the tale but I thought that there was a lot of meaningless padding throughout. I would have given the book four stars was it not for the use of the 'c' word twice in the sexual scenes. There are far less offensive words to use and the book isn't an offensive book, so it was a little bit surprising and not really necessary. Michael , United Kingdom 30/03/2009 Having found the book rather difficult to get on with I thought I would try the audio version. Not once did I lose track of where I was in time, and I found it very easy to follow. Both readers did an admirable job, I thought they were very well chosen for each part, and the american accents were not too harsh but very easy to listen to. As for the book itself - I was completely blown away. This is a wonderful love story that moved me more than any book has for some time. Forget the film, this is story which is enhanced by the added imagination only a book (audio or otherwise) can bring. If you havent already downloaded this, get on with it, you will love it. sareybabes, Whitehaven, United Kingdom 18/10/2009 Like others have said, this is essentially a love story but it twists and turns with all the challenges of one half of a couple being a time traveller. An excellent listen and very well read. Made me laugh and cry ... that's a good sign. Justin, United Kingdom 09/04/2009 Well told story. A little slow to get going. great idea beautifully told. Wonderfully romantic, and terrrible frightening in parts. A compelling read. Anthony, Ireland 22/07/2009 I have been a member of Audible for only a year and a half now so have listened to say 18 books at best. In the limited time I have been listening, no book comes close to The Time Traveller's Wife.Emotionally it sucked me dry and I was left a changed person which sounds well over the top but it's true. The book is sheer class and I fail to understand how anybody could find this story boring !Make sure you have adequate supplies of Kleenex is all I will say. Michael, Darlington, United Kingdom 03/06/2008 This is one of the best books I have ever read.... so far. I almost fear finishing it: because the ending may not live up to what I've read so far and because I hate it when I finish a good book that I wish would just carry on entertaining me as much as this one has. Paul, Boston, United Kingdom 20/01/2006 0/1 registered users found this helpful | Register I wasn't expecting it, but the concept simply astounded, I could not 'put-it-down' or rather turn it off whilst fighting off the need to sleep, to eat, in fact to do anything else but listen, Not having the intellect to explain how I feel about this work it is enough to say please try it for yourself and then think about what you have just experienced. krakian, South Ockendon, United Kingdom 26/12/2007 0/1 registered users found this helpful | Register This book has kept me enthralled the whole time with the beautiful narrative, the vivid verbal imagery, and the characters who have been drawn so real that I grew to love them as though they were old friends. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll share their joy, as well as their pain, and if you're anything like me, you'll be feeling tears threatening to well up inside over the inevitable ending for the last third of the book. The inevitability of the ending sits perfectly with the concept of time travel that Audrey Niffenegger has painted throughout the book, and it sits perfectly with the whole story. The theme is love, and there hasn't been a love more real in writing that I have ever seen. Nathanael, Coventry, United Kingdom 18/02/2007 0/1 registered users found this helpful | Register Great escapism. The voices are brill, and the story is *so* strong and powerful. I definitely recommend this audiobook. Katie, Basingstoke, United Kingdom 04/07/2007 0/1 registered users found this helpful | Register I haven't listened to the whole of the book yet, but what I have listened to sounds really excellent, and I am looking forwards to hearing the whole of the book. whatyetagain, Salford, United Kingdom 08/06/2007 0/1 registered users found this helpful | Register I have now bought and listened to a number of Audio Books and have enjoyed them all for different reasons. I have to say, however, that I was expecting more from this one. On the upside, the narration is very good. On the downside, it is impossible to keep track of when, where and what is happening. It seems to be a thousand micro stories in one and for this reason, the book does not seem to flow at all. The story line simply drifts along with few ups and downs and you do find yourself half-way through the 17 hours wondering when it is going to end. By the same token, it is an intriguing idea and you do seem to persevere. This one is definitely for the love story fans rather than those wanting a gripping story. Ironically, on various levels, the end is the best part ! Jonathan, Mold, United Kingdom 19/01/2007 0/6 registered users found this helpful | RegisterAudiobook Keywords: Fiction, Chick Lit, Romance
